Mini-Tillers/Garden Tillers General

If you own a moderate sized garden that isn’t big enough for a rototiller, but too big to weed and cultivate by hand, then you should consider purchasing a mini rototiller. They do all of the same things that their big brothers do, plus more. In addition to just tilling your garden, many of them can cut tall grass and remove weeds from your garden. The great thing is their price – many mini rototillers can be purchased for under $300 One of the most popular and most advertised mini rototillers is the Mantis mini Tiller. This particular model is capable of far more than just tilling your garden.

Maybe you want to purchase a mini tiller, but fear it won’t have enough power or be big enough to suit your needs. As a general rule, if your garden is smaller than a few acres, a mini tiller should be just fine. The power output depends on which type of tiller you purchase. If you purchase a gas model, it will have more power, but at the expense of more maintenance and more noise. Electric models have less power, but are nearly silent and easy to maintain. You can use your mini tiller for more than merely cultivating your garden too. There are certain attachments available which allow you to guide the tiller down each row while it removes the weeds, but spares the plants. It can also be used for landscaping around your home. Perhaps it is time to reseed your lawn with new sod. Normally, you would either have to spend a few days of backbreaking labor pulling up the old sod, or have the sod company do it for you. If you own a mini rototiller, it is easily capable of shredding that old sod to bits in preparation for the new sod.

Overall, mini rototillers are great if you have a garden that is under a few acres. If you have a garden any bigger, it is recommended that you look into purchasing a full sized rototiller – this is just for ongoing the weeding part!  If you are talking of tilling an acre, you will want to hire someone for the spring and fall turn.   Mini tillers are also great for landscaping and keeping your property looking great.

Honda FG100 (old model)

If you are an avid gardener or landscaper and are sick and tired of tilling your garden by hand, then it is probably time to purchase a rototiller. You may have put off purchasing a rototiller because you feel you don’t need one that they are only for people who have 10 acre gardens. If this is what you believe, then you have probably never heard of mini rototillers. Mini tillers are basically like their big brothers, but they have smaller engines and smaller tine size and tiller width. They are great for the outdoor gardening enthusiast who has a garden too big to till by hand, but not big enough to warrant purchasing a normal rototiller. If you are already in the market for a mini rototiller, then you have probably seen a few of them advertised. Some common names that come to mind are Mantis and Honda. One of the most popular Honda rototillers is the FG100.

Since the FG100 is an older model, you can get it for amazing prices where you can find it. Even though it is slightly old, it still functions just like a new one. It features a four stroke engine for smooth tilling and no smoke. You won’t have to worry about mixing oil into the gas either. The tiller only weighs 27 pounds, which means almost anybody can handle it. The tiller pulverizes the dirt instead of other competitors which simply reel in the dirt and turn it over. Turning the dirt over simply isn’t enough when you need to cultivate large portions of land.

In addition to being used in gardens, you can use your FG100 for other applications too. You can attach a brush trimmer and use it as a weed eater or powerful lawnmower. There are certain attachments which even allow you to dig small trenches, while others allow you to remove the weeds out of your garden while sparing the plants.

If you are in the market for a mini rototiller, then look no farther than the FG100. While the model may be a little old, it is still capable of doing everything you need it to do.

For those that have gardens large enough to require a tiller, but not large enough to justify the purchase of an expensive rototiller, your answer may be mini rototillers. Mini rototillers generally offer the same features as normal rototillers. You can till gardens, cultivate weeds and even do some minor landscaping if you need to. The great thing about mini tillers is that they are cheap, but just as effective. One of the most popular mini rototiller models is the Troy Bilt TB 154.

The cords are maintained nicely, all in one place on the handle.

If you are in the market for a mini rototiller, then you have probably been searching around for the best value. You have probably seen a lot of brands advertised such as Mantis and Honda. Mantis is generally a great value, but as a company maybe it hasn’t been around long enough for it to have a track record such as Honda’s. There are many great Honda rototillers that will get the job done. One of the best models in the mini size is the FG110.

The FG110 is a relatively new model, but it has already become one of the most popular mini rototillers on the market. The FG110 is great if you have up to a medium or maybe even a large sized garden or any form of landscaping to do. The tiller is great for old and young alike. Since it weighs only 29 pounds, everybody should be able to handle it. The FG110 is a mid-tine model, meaning that the tines are mounted right below the engine. The model features a four stroke engine which offers outstanding performance and isn’t very loud.  It is known as an easy starting engine.

There are many features the FG110 has that many other mini tillers don’t. Below is a list of some of those features/advantages.

  • Quiet and smoke free relative to a two stroke
  • Very fast tine speed (294 RPM) which produces very fine soil to work with
  • The Honda Hybrid Tines dig and cultivate at the same time, accomplishing two tasks at once
  • Performance grade transmission never misses a gear
  • No assembly required when you first purchase it
  • The handlebars fold down for easy storage
  • Includes a two year limited warranty honored by Honda
  • 1.1 horsepower engine which produces 25 cc’s

Troy Bilt TB144

Posted by Mini-Tiller Dude | Posted in Troy Bilt | Posted on 29-07-2010

For those that have relatively small gardens, but ones that are too big to till by hand, a mini tiller is often the right choice. Mini rototillers come in all shapes and sizes and forms, but they all work on the same basic principle. They all have smaller engines (or electric engines), smaller tines and smaller tilling widths than normal rototillers. The TB144 tiller is one of these mini tillers, in addition to being able to cultivate your garden, it also has a built in edging tool great for defining the edge of your garden and making small trenches.

The TB144 has been around for over 10 years, and has received fairly positive reviews from users and critics alike. The product is a favorite for those that need to maintain small to medium sized herb, vegetable and flower gardens. The TB144 costs $300 brand new, and can be purchased from most major home improvement stores, such as Lowe’s, Home Depot and Menards. Below are some of the features that you will find on the TB144. A unique edging tool that is useful for cleaning up around the edge of flower beds and the perimeter of your garden.

26cc four cycle engine that is powerful enough for your daily gardening work; four cycle means there is no need to fumble with mixing oil and gas.

Spring assist starting system makes it extremely easy to start the engine.

Eight inch steel cultivating tines, which can cultivate, shred weeds and till your garden.

Adjustable tilling width which varies from 6 to 10 ¼ inches.

Tilling depth of up to eight inches.

Lightweight which makes it easy to handle and store.

Every model comes with a 2 year limited warranty if it malfunctions.

The Troy Bilt TB144 is a great model for those that require a tiller, but can’t justify purchasing a full sized one because their garden is too small. The gas engine is powerful enough to till through most dirt that you encounter, but quiet enough so that it doesn’t disturb your neighbors.

Craftsman Electric Mini Tiller

Posted by Mini-Tiller Dude | Posted in Craftsman | Posted on 26-07-2010

For those that have moderately large gardens that are too large for hand cultivating, but too small to justify the purchase of a full scale rototiller, you might consider purchasing a mini tiller. Mini tillers are almost exactly like their big brothers, but have smaller engines, less tilling width and generally smaller tines. Many people wonder if they should purchase a gas mini tiller or an electric one. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but many people choose electric models because they are lighter, less noise and easier to maintain. One of the most popular electric mini tillers is the Craftsman Electric Mini Tiller.

The Craftsman Electric Mini Tiller is fully electric, meaning no gas or oil is needed for it to operate. Since it is electric, the engine can start and stop on a dime, meaning you have full control over the tiller. The tilling width is adjustable from 6-10 inches, making it great for those that need to till in narrow areas. You can use the mini tiller for more than just gardening, too. You can purchase optional attachments, which allows you to dig small trenches, cut tall grass and do minor landscaping around the home. The model features a fully folding handle, making it great for storage in small places. The unit weighs in at only 31 pounds, meaning almost anyone can maneuver it as needed. When you purchase the tiller at a retail store, it will come fully assembled, letting you use it right when you get home.

The Craftsman Electric Mini Tiller is great for those that can’t justify the purchase of a normal rototiller, but have too big of a garden to justify wasting hours on end cultivating it. The tiller is rated for up to 2500 square feet, which is big enough to encompass almost any home garden. Despite having only an electric engine, the tiller is powerful enough to accomplish most tasks that you would face on a daily basis, including tilling, cultivating and removing weeds. Many people have purchased the Craftsman Electric Mini Tiller and have had great success with it; you can too.

There are several types of Craftsman Tillers. The Craftsman Front Tine Tillers, Craftsman Rear Tine Tillers, 2 Cycle Mini Tiller, and the 4 Cycle Mini Tiller. The Craftsman Front Tine Tillers have blades in the front that are used to break ground in a new garden. The Craftsman Rear Tine Tiller have wheels in the back that resemble a lawn mower. The Craftsman Rear Tine Tiller is used to mow grass. The Rear Tine Tiller can be used to go over bumps and rocks smoothly. The Front Tine Tiller is a bit more bumpier while toiling through bumps and rocks, so the Rear Tine Tiller may be the best choice for this kind of task.

The prices for Craftsman Front Tine and Rear Tine Tillers are more expensive than some other brands. The Craftsman Front Tine Tiller costs $390 and the Craftsman Rear Tine Tiller costs $600. The Dual Rotating Tine Tiller has a cost of $750. The 2 Cycle and 4 Cycle Mini Tillers are less expensive. The 2 Cycle Mini Tiller runs at a cost of $220 and the 4 Cycle Mini Tillers costs $300. Craftsman Tillers can be bought from stores like Sears, Home Depot, and Online Stores like Nex Tag, which allows a buyer to do comparisons with other brands and prices. Competitors for the Craftsman Tillers are the Troy Bilt Tillers. The best prices to find cheaper Craftsman Tillers are Sears Outlet and Kmart. Sears Outlet have Craftsman 12 inch Rear Tine Tillers for $137, which are the same price for the 4 Cycle Mini Tillers.

Echo Tillers & Cultivators

Posted by Mini-Tiller Dude | Posted in Echo | Posted on 10-07-2010

There are two types of Echo Tiller Cultivators. They make the regular full time mini tiller / garden cultivator in the TC-210.  This is a walk behind unit with reversible tines and a 21.2 cc engine.  At about 20 lbs this is a standard sized walk behind mini tiller.

They also have their Pro Attachment Series: basically a weed trimmer with interchangeable heads.  You can buy a cultivating head and also a thatching head.  There are three sizes of power heads to pick from.  From the 21.2cc engine to a 25.4 cc engine

Echo Tiller Gardening Cultivators can be found at most Online and Home Improvement stores. Stores like Home Depot and Sears carry most cultivator brands on the market. Each brand are light weight and easy to handle, while serving the same purpose. Most Echo Tillers and other name brand Cultivators are no more than twenty some pounds in weight. They are tall and angular, so they are easy to handle while trimming.

Mantis Mini Tillers

Posted by Mini-Tiller Dude | Posted in Mantis | Posted on 10-07-2010

Mantis offers a variety of miniature tillers/cultivators in their line of products. Among the miniature models are the Mantis 2-Cycle Tillers, Mantis 4-Cycle Tillers, Mantis Electric Tillers, and the latest invention, Mantis XP 16” Tillers. Tillers are usually notoriously large, but Mantis offers a line of tillers that guarantee to get the job done efficiently and with a longevity that cannot be argued with. In terms of market, the Mantis tillers are the lightest tillers available.

But don’t let the lightness fool you, the Mantis tillers are extremely powerful with the perfectly effective combination of Mantis patented tines and potent engines. The result of this successful duo is the power to breakthrough any amount of hard soil. Even more alluring than its lightness and compactness, is the patented reversible “serpentine” tines that allow the Mantis to breakthrough the soil and not only this, but a lot the tines to go several inches deep through thick soil.

Along with this is versatility which allows Mantis products to become perfect and complete garden tools for any gardener. Mantis offers a variety of add-on accessories to the tillers to make cultivation even more thorough than before!

However, the lightness of the Mantis tillers have been said to be an advantage while being a disadvantage. Although consumers enjoy the fact that the tiller is so light because it makes it easier to move around, to store it, and to work with it, some complain that the light weight of the product sometimes makes it hard to burrow underneath the ground any more than 3 inches without a lot of struggle.

Dissatisfaction, if ever felt, does not go unwarranted with the Mantis company. Buyers are often offered a 1-year trial period to use the Mantis product and if ever dissatisfied are allowed to return it, money-back guaranteed, no questions asked, no arguments made. Mantis also promises their customers that if a tine were ever to break, the tine would be prepared, free of charge because they believe their tines are virtually unbreakable. In addition to that, Mantis tillers are also protected by a 5-year warranty.

There is a lot of protection and security that comes with owning a Mantis tiller. They strike me as a company to be trusted when it comes to fulfilling your gardening needs.
